Artist Statement

Elizabeth Veloz

My educational background is one of Business and Economics, but I have been painting and winning art contests since childhood.  I am an artist who is self-taught, however for as long as I can recall, I remember being able to draw and paint.

In my work I explore a darker more sensual part of nature through the Intimacy of Flowers and the Exploration of Darkness in Landscapes.   Flowers are often positioned to resemble human bodies and poses.  Landscapes are modified to capture contrast which does not naturally occur in nature.

Every painting starts with a photograph of a landscape or flower.  It is then darkened enough to create the illusion of being in two worlds. Backgrounds are often bright and light.  The foregrounds, primarily in the form of trees, mountains and flowers are dark, in many cases black or grey or brown, creating contrast and drama.  Many of my compositions are representations of my experiences, in particular what I see when simple objects are posed to portray sensual dances between them and light.

I have always aspired to capture nature in my own distinctive style.  People who really know me say that there exists within me a mysteriously dark side that comes out through my work.  I feel that through painting I can reveal everything about myself, exposing many exciting layers as an artist and person.  A work of art is but a true expression of one's self.
